HOW TO ESTABLISH YOUR PODCAST CONCEPT

Before you can start recording your podcast, it’s important to develop a solid concept. Whether you want to start a podcast that recaps your favourite TV show or helps your company achieve a particular goal, you should consider where your expertise lies and what your listeners will enjoy.

Once you decide on your concept, the rest of the planning stage will flow.

1 - NAME, FORMAT, LENGTH

NAME: Do your research and decide on a name that’s easy for listeners to find, include some keywords relating to your topic, and reflect your personality or the podcast tone of voice.

FORMAT: Here you’ll need to decide on what kind of format will help you share your message best. Will a solocast, interview, fiction, or narrative-style podcast help you?

LENGTH: While you might be wondering what the best length for a podcast is, there’s actually no single ideal podcast length. Depending on the type of show you’re producing, the time will vary.

2 - FIND A NICHE TOPIC

All the best content is created by first having a niche topic. You want to have enough to talk about in each episode to keep your listeners engaged. Try to narrow it down by having at least 100+ episodes, but not too broad that it doesn't appeal to your target audience. For example, instead of having a 'music' podcast, be more specific by focusing on a certain genre, like 'R&B' podcast. Create a list of questions to help you figure out your niche, like 'who is my target audience' 'what helps my podcast stand out from the rest' 'why should people listen to my podcast'. Once you have this down, you’re on your way to finding your niche.

3 - IDENTIFY YOUR PODCAST GOALS

So why do you want to start a podcast? First, ask yourself this question to help you figure out your goals.

Is it to:

  • Create awareness about your business or a certain topic?

  • Share an important message?

  • Educate your listeners on a specific topic?

  • Have fun?

These are just a few questions to ask yourself before getting started. Once you know your ‘why’, this can give you a kickstart to get things going and establish your goals. Having a strong 'why' can also help you with motivation, as it acts as a reminder of why you started in the first place.

Establishing a concept for your podcast is not something to be rushed. You need a solid plan in place to be organised and ready to go.
