HOW TO NAME YOUR PODCAST

1 - CHECK THE DOMAIN

Type the name into every podcast directory, and make sure it’s not already trademarked. Avoid the headache of building out your show’s branding only to find you can’t secure the domain name because it already exists. Use Namecheckr and Instant Domain Search to get a name’s availability across multiple networks.

2 - DON’T INCLUDE “PODCAST”

The word “podcast” doesn’t tell the listener much. It’s better to use a word that describes your show and exhibits your personality. If a potential listener comes across your show on iTunes or a podcasts app, they already know you host a podcast, so using podcast in your name is probably not necessary.

3 - OFFENSIVE WORDS

It doesn’t make you stand out from the crowd. In fact, it could backfire, for example, if Apple refuses to approve your podcast. Some older podcasts get away with using asterisks to substitute letters in expletive words (like sh*t), but new podcasts struggle getting approved with any word that may be offensive.

4. REFLECT THE CONTENT

When someone sees your podcast name or show title they should immediately know what to expect when they start listening. Too often podcasters try to get “cute” and come up with a name that’s a bit off the wall, but that only serves to confuse potential listeners.

5 - MAKE IT SHORT AND SIMPLE

If you can make your name 20 characters or shorter, you’re doing well. The shorter your podcast name, the more memorable it is. It’s also got a much better chance of displaying properly on your listeners’ favourite podcast apps. If you’re absolutely set on having a longer title, try to make sure the first few words are descriptive. Then if the title gets truncated on peoples’ phone screens, they’ve still got some idea of what your podcast is about.
